Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu, said on Thursday that the Federal Government was making efforts to check illegal migration by Nigerians.
The minister stated this at an Anti-Migration Summit organised by the Black Indigenous Ancestral Community (BANC) in Abuja.
He said illegal migration had several undesirable negative impacts such as human trafficking and drug trafficking, adding that the government would implement policies and programs to boost the economy and create jobs.
According to him, the federal government is aware of the urgent need to advance the Nigerian economy to a commendable level where it can support its leadership status as the pride of Africa.
Bagudu said: “A two trillion dollar economy will support the correction of all the things we are talking about here, like illegal migration or the ‘Japa’ syndrome in Nigeria.
“Nigeria is not seeking to end migration of its citizens, but to ensure that people migrate only by choice, not by force.
“The current government is working hard to reduce illegal migration of Nigerians through various policies and programs that will boost the economy and create jobs.”
However, he advised those looking to migrate to ensure proper documentation and carefully choose the work they will do in their destination country.
