Edo: KPU warns political parties about campaign deadline

The National Electoral Commission (INEC) has warned political parties and candidates in Edo State against engaging in election campaigning beyond the Thursday midnight deadline.

INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, gave the warning in a statement on Thursday in Abuja.

He said all campaigns by political parties would end at midnight on Thursday in accordance with Section 94(1) of the 2022 Election Act, and point 12 of the Schedule and Activities for the 2024 Edo gubernatorial election.

Olumekun said: “It is therefore illegal for any political party in Edo State to engage in any rally, procession or media campaign from midnight tonight.

“The prohibition, including sanctions, is regulated in Article 96 of the 2022 Election Law.”

Olumekun also warned parties, candidates and their supporters not to come to the polling stations in campaign attire or carry any campaign materials on election day.

“We appeal to parties, candidates and their supporters to pay attention to legal provisions and comply,” he added.
