PRESS RELEASE.
APC TO GOVERNOR OBASEKI: STOP HARASSING PUBLIC OFFICIALS, THEY ARE NOT YOUR PUPPETS.
A terse circular from the office of the Head of Service, dated September 16, was issued directing all civil servants to assemble at the Victor Uwaifo Hub on Tuesday, September 17 at the request of the Governor, Godwin Obaseki. At the 8am meeting on Tuesday, the Governor issued a decree that all civil servants who refused to vote for his candidate, Asue Ighodalo, would be summarily dismissed. He directed Directors and senior staff to inform their subordinates of the directive which he said must be complied with.
Even when some of the staff complained, a visibly angry Governor Obaseki vowed to deal ruthlessly with the staff if they failed to comply with the directive. According to Governor Obaseki, the election would be a fight to the death, and he ordered the staff and civil servants to join him in the exercise of retaking Edo State by fire and force. He also assured them that he would give them hazard pay starting Thursday to motivate the civil servants to exercise voting. If the governor gives you money, collect it. After all, the money belongs to the people. Collect the money and vote according to your conscience.
We want to assure the great civil servants of Edo State that we stand with them. The right to vote and be voted is enshrined in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and no one, no matter how powerful, can take that away from us right away. We want to further reassure the civil servants of the state that the incoming APC led government will not only pay the national minimum wage but will also ensure that other allowances are provided to make life easier for the average civil servant. We know that what the civil servants take home from their promised N70k is actually N54k but the incoming APC government will pay the full N70k, plus other allowances. We call on all Edo civil servants to come out en masse to vote for APC and Senator Monday Okpebholo on Saturday, September 21st. No one will harass anyone. We need your support and votes, to make Edo State a better place for all.
Governor Obaseki should stop this idea of forcing public servants to vote for his favorite candidate. Edo civil servants are not children. They have eyes to see the rot in the state. They have since concluded to support APC for a new life that will usher in positive developments across the state.
