Abia to hold local council elections on November 2

The Abia State government will hold general elections in 17 local council areas in the state on November 2.

The Chairman of the State Independent National Electoral Commission (ABSIEC), Prof. George Chima, announced the date during a meeting with political parties and other stakeholders on Saturday in Umuahia.

Elections will be held in 184 districts across the state.

Chima told stakeholders that the essence of the meeting was to assure them of the commission’s genuine desire and determination to conduct the elections.

He said the party’s primary elections would take place between September 25 and October 4, while the submission of candidate lists would take place from October 5 to October 7.

The ABSIEC chairman said the election campaign would run from October 18 to October 31.

Chima urged stakeholders to ensure contestants and political parties play by the rules.

“Our assurance to you is that the general elections to our various local government assemblies in 2024 will be anything but ordinary.

“The commission is committed to making this election free, fair and credible, and also ensuring that it is viewed as such,” he said.
