Edo Guber Poll: Police Activate Post-Election Security Strategy, Urges Peace

With the conclusion of the Edo 2024 gubernatorial election, the Nigerian Police has swiftly implemented a robust post-election security strategy to maintain peace and order across the state.

The Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) overseeing the elections, DIG Frank Mba, mni, has taken proactive measures to ensure that potential threats to public safety are addressed promptly.

According to a statement released by the Force’s Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the post-election strategy included a show of force exercise.

“This highly visible police presence is intended to reassure citizens of their safety and demonstrate the police’s readiness to respond decisively to any disturbance.

“The show of force, which includes patrols and strategic positioning of security units, aims to strengthen public confidence, particularly in light of the high tensions that often accompany election periods.

“Apart from the show of force, DIG Mba directed the enhanced deployment of police personnel in key locations in Edo State.

“These include facilities of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), homes and offices of key actors involved in the elections, and critical infrastructure, such as government buildings and transport hubs.

“This concentrated security presence is designed to deter any attempts at violence or disruption, particularly during the sensitive post-election period when results are finalized and emotions can run high,” he said.

The Nigerian police urged all citizens to remain peaceful and continue carrying out their lawful activities, stressing that the right of individuals to express concerns must not result in violence or unrest.

Law enforcement has issued a stern warning to any individuals or groups contemplating acts that may violate public order.

They reiterated that security forces, including the police and other allied agencies, are fully prepared to counter any threat swiftly and decisively.

Security experts have praised the Nigerian police’s proactive approach, stressing that such measures are crucial to preventing escalation of tensions.

Historically, post-election periods in various parts of Nigeria have sometimes been marked by violence, and law enforcement agencies have learned to prioritize preventive security measures to avoid chaos.

Adejobi reiterated that the police remain committed to upholding the rule of law, stressing that anyone caught attempting to disturb the peace will face the full weight of the law.

He also urged the public to cooperate with the police and other security forces by reporting any suspicious activity.

The 2024 Edo gubernatorial election was largely peaceful, with high voter turnout and minimal incidents of unrest. However, law enforcement agencies are leaving no stone unturned to ensure that peace is maintained as the results are tallied and the post-election process unfolds. The deployment of this security strategy by the police force is seen as a crucial step in protecting both the integrity of the electoral process and the safety of Edo State residents.
