APC conspired with INEC to undermine the Edo – Ighodalo elections

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in last weekend’s governorship election in Edo State, Asue Ighodalo, on Thursday accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of buying voters with naira mint notes during the exercise.

Ighodalo, who appeared on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme, said the APC was collaborating with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to undermine the election.

He emphasized that the PDP did not buy and sell votes during the election.

INEC on Sunday evening declared the APC candidate as the winner of the election ahead of his rival from the Peoples Democratic Party (PD), Asue Ighodalo.

The APC candidate polled 291,667 votes to edge out Ighodalo who polled 247,274 votes in a closely contested election.

Labor Party flag bearer, Olumide Akpata, finished third with 22,763 votes.

Ighodalo said: “We are not involved in vote buying at all. APC agents and other agents came with banknotes directly from the CBN or from banks, banknotes, and they offered N25,000, N30,000 and N50,000 per vote.

“What our people did was go to them and abuse them and tell them that you cannot come here to buy votes. But we don’t do vote buying in any way, I’m clear about that.

“We don’t even have to go and buy votes. The people of Edo State have been very supportive of us. Only when you are not confident in your abilities can you not do it. That’s when you do shady things. And the APC, through this election, with the collaboration, complicity and support of INEC, has undermined the entire democratic process.”
