Bill that wants to change the Election Law, 2022, increases the second reading in the Senate on Thursday.
This bill is trying to overcome the existing gap, reduce the cost of election, and enable the selected office holders to serve as ad hoc delegations in the political party convention.
The ratification of the bill followed the main debate presentation on general principles by its sponsors, Senator Saliu Mustapha at Plenary on Thursday in Abuja.
In his presentation, Mustapha noted that while the 2022 Election Law was a significant increase in the 2010 law that was revoked, still contained important gaps that had to be handled.
He said: “It should be noted that regardless of the improvement, the 2022 Election Law has not significantly reduced the financial burden of general elections in the Federal Nigeria government.
“The proposed amendment aims to create a more efficient and cost -effective selection process that will encourage greater citizen participation.”

He noted the increase in election costs in Nigeria, saying the budget for general elections had increased from ₦ 1.5 billion in 1999 to ₦ 350 billion in 2023.
To reduce these costs, members of the MPs propose the behavior of all elections on the same day to minimize the costs associated with a prolonged campaign and staggered voting.
“The election of the same day will not only help the government reduce costs but will also increase the number of voters and promote the involvement of greater citizens in the election process,” he added.
Following the deliberations, Vice President of the Senate, Jibrin Barau, who led the plenary, referred the bill to the Senate Committee on the issue of election for further legislative actions.
