The Kano State Police Command has denied reports of the alleged killings of IGBO travelers after the death sentence without a court of northern hunters in the state of Edo by a mob who thought they were kidnappers.
Earlier on Saturday, a post distributed on social media had been circulating with a claim that the bus 18 seats carrying passengers from southeast were ambushed and caught fire in canoe by a mob of violence in a retaliation attack.
The post, which was widely distributed, has claimed that an attack that did not leave a survivor, was carried out as a retaliation for the killing of the northern travelers by young people in the state of Edo.
The post, accompanied by three pictures of burning vehicles, also accused that panic had spread throughout the IGBO community in Kano, with Fulani men raging through the city and attacked anyone from IGBO descendants.
“Breaking: A 18-seat bus carrying IGBO passengers caught fire in Kano. Panic has spread throughout the IGBO community in the state when the Fulani people went berserk, attack and killed the IGBO they met as retaliation for Kata K!
“Tragically, 18 IGBOS lost his life this morning while traveling back east. A cruel fulani horde was ambushed their bus, burned it, and did not leave the survivors,” he added.
But when he refuted the position in a statement on Saturday night, a spokesman for the State Police, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kilamawa, urged the Nigerians to ignore the viral post because nothing happened in the state.
Describing the post as fake news, wrong and misleading, the Kiabalah said that the police were on the postal path with the intention to bring them to court.
The statement urged community members to “ignore this false news and refrain from spreading unverified information, wrong information, and hate speech that can cause damage, panic, and riots in the community”.
“Kano State Police Command is committed to maintaining the law and order in the state and ensuring the safety and security of all residents, regardless of their ethnic or religious background,” said the police spokesman.
“We have started an investigation of this fake news source and will take the action needed to bring those responsible for justice.
“We ask the public to work with the police and report suspicious activities or those who spread false information to the nearest police station or through our emergency number.
“Let’s work together to maintain peace, harmony, and security in the state canoeing,” added the statement.
Meanwhile, the examination of facts in the background of the post together revealed that there was no such incident that happened in the canoe or anywhere in the north.
Fact examination revealed that the burning 18-chairs bus picture used in the post came from an accident on the freeway of the lagos-abadan barrier that occurred in September 2023, and was used by immoral people with intentional goals to spread hatred and incite ethnic and religious violence in the northwest.
