Finland to get out of the Ottawa Treaty while Europe strengthens against Russia


Finland has announced its intention to retire from the Ottawa treaty while the countries in Europe push against potential threats from Russia.

The Treaty of Ottawa is the convention of the prohibition of anti-personal mine, which countries approved in 1997 to eliminate anti-personal anti-female mines all over the world.

In recent weeks, the countries have made a U -reversal on the treaty to protect their territory, due to the Russian Vication of Ukraine since 2022.

Tuesday, Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo said that a security environment merit in Europe has precipitated the resolution of his country to get out of the Ottawa Treaty.

Orpo has declared that Finland and Europe must “evaluate all measures to strengthen our deterrence and defense skills, individually and in NATO”.

“We also propose that Finland begins to prepare for the withdrawal from the Ottawa agreement,” said Prime Minister in a press conference.

The announcement of Finland comes weeks after four other nations in the organization of the North Atlantic Treaty – Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia – have made a similar decision.

In response, the Minister of Defense of Latvia Andris Sprūd described Finland as an important regional partner in NATO which shares a very long border with Russia.

“Finland’s decision to prepare for the withdrawal from the Ottawa Convention aligns Finland with other regional partners of NATO, including Latvia, who recently made similar decisions,” he wrote on X.

Last week, the transnational military alliance warned Russia against further attacks in Europe, swearing that the retaliation of NATO would be “devastating”.
