Ebonyi Gov ordered the arrest of six commissioners on the project delay

Governor Francis Nwifuru from the Ebonyi state has directed the arrest of six commissioners and contractors accused of blocking government projects.

The decision arose after the investigation report involved officials in actions that allegedly damage administrative efforts.

Commissioners affected by the order including Prof. Omari Omaka (Tertiary Education), Victor Chukwu (Environment), IFENY OGUEWU (Culture and Tourism), Uchenna Igwe (local government and tribal chief problems), Dr. Moses Ekuma (Health), and Felix Igboke (Project Monitoring). Also named the arrest was the Chairperson of the Afikpo Regional Government Area, Mr. Timothy Nwachi.

This latest step follows the strict pattern of disciplinary steps under the leadership of Governor Nwifuru. Previously, on March 18, 2025, he suspected three commissioners – Solomon Azi (grant and donor agents), Victor Chukwu (environment), and Ikeuwa Omebe (rural development) – because they failed to attend official tasks. In one day of the suspension, two aides – Nnannna Nwangele (special assistant for airport security) and Felix Okemini (Senior Senior Security Assistant, Ebonyi North) – were dismissed due to violations.

The instructions for arresting commissioners were expressed by Dr. Ilang Donatus, Chairperson of the State Council Committee on the Izzo and Amaze Housing Project, during the Press Briefing in Abakaliki on Tuesday. He explained that the move was needed because the contractor failed to fulfill their contract obligations.

“The governor is not happy with the pace of work, which should have been completed,” Donatus said.

“The government has decided to clamp the contractors and commissioners mandated to oversee the projects. As you can see, our governor is a man with a passionate heart, he likes to provide assistance, so the construction of the houses for the victims of the communal crisis.

“He was not happy that the project was delayed and had ordered that all commissioners who were supposed to ensure a rapid settlement of the housing unit were arrested,” he added.
