The wife of the Ebonyi State Governor, Mrs Mary-Maudline Uzoamaka Nwifuru, has commended Ebonyi women for their resilience in the face of the economic crisis in the country. He compared the situation to the straitjacket the Israelites found themselves in in the Bible and the resilient role of the people supporting Queen Esther to overcome their challenges.
The First Lady of Ebonyi therefore called on women to give the same support to her and the Ebonyi State governor’s administration that the Israelites gave to Queen Esther, especially as the 2027 general elections approach.
Mrs Nwifuru made the statement at the grand finale of the Women August Meeting 2026 held at Pa Ngele Township Stadium, Abakaliki, where she also empowered over 52 market women with financial assistance to revive their businesses. The theme of the event was “The Power of Resilient Women in Nation Building”.
The First Lady of Ebonyi said the administration of Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru has opened up more opportunities for women in governance, healthcare, education and economic empowerment, stressing that such interventions should not be taken for granted.
“We must not take this for granted. As women, we must remember those who remembered us and support those who supported us, especially the leadership who demonstrated genuine commitment to the well-being and progress of our people,” Ms Nwifuru said.
He specifically called on women to rally behind the candidates of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the 2027 general elections, describing their votes as an opportunity to reciprocate the support and goodwill accorded them by the current administration. “It is time we show appreciation by voting for all APC candidates in the next general elections. They supported us and it is time we show our support to them. I know my women cannot disappoint me,” he said.
The First Lady also challenged Ebonyi women to channel their resilience into building stronger families, peaceful communities and a more prosperous society. “Ebonyi women have always been resilient, but today we must be more than resilient. We need wisdom, knowledge, unity and courage,” she said, urging them to move “from celebration to commitment, from discussion to action and from individual success to collective progress.”
Speaking through his deputy, Princess Patricia Obila, Governor Nwifuru commended his wife for her continuous efforts to empower women and improve their well-being. He said women in Ebonyi have demonstrated exceptional capabilities in governance, health, community development and other sectors, assuring them that his administration will continue to prioritize their inclusion in policies, programs and political appointments.
The Governor also commended women for their participation in the recently concluded local government elections, in which the APC won all 13 presidency positions and 171 councilor seats.
Earlier, the event Chairman and Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, represented by Chief Austin Umahi, described the August meeting as a platform that had transformed from a simple social gathering into a powerful tool for development, mobilization and strategic engagement.
Umahi commended the Ebonyi State Government for appointing women to positions of responsibility and urged them to reciprocate what he described as the administration’s goodwill with political support in 2027. “If you want to marry a good wife, come to Ebonyi State. If you want a resilient woman, come to Ebonyi State,” he said, expressing optimism that the state would produce a female senator.
The highlights of the events were traditional dances, dressing competitions, empowerment of 52 women, goodwill messages, etc.
