Life expectancy: the lowest Nigeria in the world – Thage

The director of the group of lawyers for positive development (APD), March Oyinki, in his revision of the Nigeria 2024 Global Performance Index in Life Expecy Wdi, in the April 2025 edition of the APD bulletin, attributed the poor evaluation of the country’s life expectancy to bad health and hygiene policies, and ineffective strategies for implementing the federal government.

According to him, the World Health Organization (WHO) describes life expectancy as the average number of years that a newborn could expect to live, if it should go through the life exposed to the specific mortality area for sex and the prevalent age at the time of its birth, for a specific year, in a certain country, territory or geographical area.

“Life expectancy is an indicator often used to illustrate socio-economic development in countries. Life expectancy at birth is an indicator of overall mortality in the population of a country. The life expectancy at birth based on the latest estimates of the United Nations population division in 201 countries in 2025 is 73.5 years on average, an increase of 0.23% from 2024, which was 73.3 years”

“The framework of the results of the UNInte Nations High Commissioners for Refugees (UNHCR) defines the needs of life in terms of access to basic services and health care, nutrition, safe drinking water, toilet -Sanitari and Wash), food, shelter, energy, education, as well as domestic articles and specialized services for people with specific needs.

“The life expectancy index of the United Nations population division shows that Asian countries have the longest life

“The African countries are at the bottom of the life expectancy index. South Sudan ranked 199 countries with 57.85 years, followed by Chad 200 out of 201 with 55.43 years and Nigeria is at the bottom of the table, ranked for 201 countries with 54.78 years.

“Those who attribute the shortening of life to Nigeria to several factors and the greatest one among them is the quality of the air we breathe. The impact of air pollution on the life expectancy in the country is greater than that of HIV/AIDS. The effect of air pollution is almost the same as malaria, unhews drinking water and combined environmental sanitization.

“Several efforts have been made by the Federal Government to improve life expectancy in an attempt to achieve his 70 -year life expectancy projection by 2025. These government’s political objectives are focused on rehabilitation of the health sector through various intervention programs, which include basic health care services (Phc) intended to improve life expectancy.

“In addition, the marketing policy was introduced to significantly increase efficiency in the public health sector. The National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) was also started by the Ministry of Health to allow the economic accessibility of health services and improve health monetary policies.

“Obviously, the current life expectancy in Nigeria is very far from the projection of the Federal Government of 2025. This clearly indicates the need to take a closer look at the possible dimensions that prevent the realization of the political projections and to review the implementation strategies of the current framework of policies or to develop an entirely new introduction of innovative methodologies.

“To ensure an effective delivery of the framework of the UNHCR results of the needs of life in terms of access to basic services and assistance in health, it is necessary to guarantee adequate diet, safe drinking water, toilet -health services and Wash), food, shelter, energy, education, as well as domestic articles and specialized services for people with specific needs.”
