In a chilling reminder of Nigeria’s growing crisis of the housing, two fatal accidents in the states of Zamfara and Kwara have underlined the scope and audacity of the non -state actors who terrorize rural communities.
In the state of Zamfara, a notorious group of bandits imposed a sample of N60 million out of 12 communities in the area of the local government Maru, presumably as punishment to help a recent military operation that neutralized several terrorists in the Dan Kurmi forest.
The affected communities: Koloma, Dan Hayin Zargado, Zargado, Dan Godbe, Sabuwar Tunga, Makini, Bubaka, Yelwa, Bahwada, Koda, Manya and Kabusu – were summoned by the reinforced group under the pretext of Broker’s peace. Instead, a ultimatum stark was issued at the village heads: paying the levy or dealing with serious consequences.
“They accused us of helping the soldiers by providing intelligence. They said we also burned the forest to expose them,” said Sani Usman, a traditional leader of Dan Kurmi, in an interview with BBC Hausa monitored by the premium times.
The efforts to reach the spokesman for the Zamfara State Police Command, Abubakar Sadiq, were not successful, since his line was unreachable from Monday evening.
This form of extortion-domesticated as “protection levy”-after a recurring threat in several north-western states including Katsina, Sokoto, Kebbi, Kaduna and Niger.
Only in the state of Katsina, a terrorist leader named Nabaruma recently requested N10 million from Ungwan Zakara, while three other communities have been ordered to pay a combined 1.5 million.
Safety analysts affirm that the recurring taxation of withdrawals on vulnerable communities reflects a rupture of state protection and a crisis of in -depth in depth despite repeated military offensive in the region.
In a parallel development in the area of the local government of Barutten of the State of Kwara, suspicious terrorists disguised as mimes of military camouflage killed at least six residents of Ilesha Baruba in an assault on Monday evening that left the shocked community.
Ocular witnesses said the attackers stormed the city on motorcycles, brandishing sophisticated weapons and started shooting shortly after Isha’I’s prayer.
A witness, Urar Faruq, who escaped for a short time, described the scene as “a war zone”.
“They came to uniform soldiers. At the beginning, we thought they were patrol. Suddenly, they opened fire on innocent people,” he said.
The attack raised serious concerns about the possible imitation of military personnel and the source of the uniforms of the attackers.
Reacting to the accident, Ilesha Baruba’s tureki condemned the murders, describing the attack as “an assault directed to peace and sovereignty” of the community.
“This is not just an attack on individuals. It is a message for us everything we are not safe. Our people now live in fear. We ask the government to act quickly,” he said.
Security experts asked for an increase in security operations based on intelligence and stronger community protection mechanisms to prevent further atrocities and restore confidence between rural populations that are around prolonged attacks.
