On Tuesday, the president of Ghana announced the suspension of the best judge in the country while being investigated for misconduct.
The action against the head of the Supreme Court Gertrude Araba Esaaba Tukornoo came after three separate petitions asked for his removal. The accusations against her include tampering with judicial documents and improper use of public funds.
A spokesman for President John Mahama declared in a statement he had, “in consultation with the Council of State, established that a first Facie case was established” and that Tukornoo would have been suspended while he is investigated.
The complete details of the accusations according to which the five -members Investigation Committee will investigate have not been made public.
Mahama, who came into office in January, promised a repression of the year in the nation of West Africa.
The Investigation Committee is led by the Supreme Court Judge Gabriel Pwamang. The panel also includes the former general auditor Daniel Domelevo.
Torkornoo, 61, was appointed in June 2023, becoming the 15th supreme judge of Ghana and the third woman to hold the place.
While past judicial leaders have left retirement or political argument, its suspension is the first time that a chief justice seated has to face a formal investigation through a constitutional process.
