A plug of pirates that were tried to civilians along the Oron-Calabar waterway were thwarted by a quick action from the marine officer of the State Police Command Akwa Ibom, the authorities revealed on Tuesday.
In a statement issued at UYO, the Command Spokesperson, DSP Timfon John, confirmed that police operators from the sea division had intercepted the call of trouble and immediately responded during routine search and rescue operations.
According to John, officers met no less than seven heavy armed pirates that attacked innocent passengers on a speedboat ship.
“Our marine police division quickly mobilizes operators to the scene. The criminals involved our personnel in a weapon duel but were controlled,” he said.
John explained that the pirates, who suffered gunshot wounds during the confrontation, managed to escape into a shallow river, which could not be accessed by police ships.

“The strength of the Marine Police Weapons forced the pirates, who suffered bullet wounds, to escape to the shallow river that could not be accessed by police ships. Furthermore, we stormed and managed to raid their camps and restore some of the items,” he added.
During the follow-up attack on the hiding place of the criminals, the police found cache items related to the activities of the pirates. This includes one locally made weapon, two rounds of K2 ammunition live, two empty K2 shells, and one speedboat powered by one Yamaha 200HP engine gearbox.
Additional items recovered include the 15HP Yamaha engine, dismantled engine components, improvisation equipment boxes, gasoline generators, and cow fans, among others.
The police spokesman convinced the public that efforts were ongoing to track and arrest members of the pirate gang who fled.
