The Ecowas Judiciary Court on Friday ordered the Ghana government to pay $ 75,000 as compensation to 30 members of the Homeland Study Group Foundation (HSGF) for the detention of those who violated the law in 2019.
The panel of three court members led by judge Ricardo Goncalves, in the verdict in the ECW/CCJ/APP/12/24 lawsuit, was given $ 2,500 for each applicant.
Other panel members were judges of Koroma and Judge Dupe Atoki.
The court argues that the prolonged detention of applicants without trial violates their basic rights under the Ghana Constitution and the African Charter about human rights and society.
Gonçalves, who read the verdict, said the applicants were detained for more than a year without being taken to court, violating the 48 -hour court presentation rules.

Homeland Study Group Foundation and its members were arrested under an organizational decision that was banned in 1976 for advocating the independence of West Togoland.
However, the court revoked the foundation from the lawsuit because it failed to provide proof of law registration.
The court also rejected the applicant’s claim to determine his own destiny and stated that both the foundation and its members did not have a legal position to make the claim.
