Zulum’s government forbids tree felling indiscriminately in Borno

The Governor of Borno State, Babagana Zulum, has signed two executive orders to protect the environment and improve public health in the state.

The first order forbids tree felling that violates the law and the second makes it mandatory for monthly sanitation training in the state.

The governor, who signed an executive order in a government building in Maiduguri on Saturday, said the steps were taken in response to the worrying level of environmental harassment, especially logging of uncontrolled trees.

Zulum said: “Based on the power given to me by part 14 (2) and part 20 of the 1999 Nigerian Federal Republican Constitution (as amended), Tree Law Forestry, Cap 53, Borno State Law, 1994, and all other forbids forbid deod here, Deo Babagana Umara, Deoure, Deeous Deo, Deo Babagana Umara, Dekaes, Deou, Deou, DEO, DEO Deou to this, Deou Kedara, Deous Babagana Umara, Deka.

“Therefore, with this declaration, every individual who is arrested is illegally cutting down trees must, for the first violation, facing a fine of N250,000 or prison sentence for a period of time that does not exceed three years. For the next violation, the sentence will be imprisoned for a period that does not exceed five years, or a fine that does not exceed the N500,000, or both.”

Zulum also signed an executive order that gave additional power to the Sanitation Court and stated the mandatory monthly sanitation training.

He warned that the first violator would be punished with a sentence that did not exceed two years in prison and N100,000 fines for violating sanitation orders.

“I, Babagana Umara Zulum, hereby declare the first Saturday every month as a day of sanitation, immediately.

“In the future, those found to have violated this order will be sentenced to a sentence that does not exceed a two -year prison sentence and a fine of N100,000 for violators for the first time. Violators will be responsible for prison sentences for a certain period of time which does not exceed five years,” he said.
