The former Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag, has been appointed new coach of Bayer Leverkusen, signing a two -year contract to succeed Xabi Alonso, who recently assumed the position of Real Madrid.
The 55 -year -old Dutchman, who officially begins his new role on July 1, 2025, takes care of a Leverkusen team that ended second in the Bundesliga.
It will be the first gerial position of ten hag since its October departure from Manchester United, where just over two years passed.
During his time at Old Trafford, he guided the Red Devils to the League Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024, but was fired with the club languishing in 14th place in the Premier League.
Speaking about the appointment, Leverkusen’s sports director, Simon Rolfes, praised the ten hag training pedigree:
“With Erik Ten Hag, we have brought an experienced coach with an impressive success in the field.”
“With three league titles and two victories in the National Cup, he and Ajax dominated Dutch football from 2018 to 2022”.
“And Erik demonstrated his quality as a coach with the consequent success in Manchester United in difficult circumstances sometimes.”
Ten Hag, who jumped to fame with Ajax, taking them to multiple Eredivisie titles and a memorable race to the UEFA Champions League 2019 semifinals, expressed enthusiasm for his next challenge.
“Leverkusen is one of the best clubs in Germany and also among the best clubs in Europe,” said Ten Hag.
“I have come to Leverkusen to continue the ambition shown in recent years.”
“It is an attractive challenge to establish something together in this period of change and develop an ambitious team.”
The measure ends weeks of speculation about the next destination of ten hag as the intention of Bayer Leverkusen to remain competitive nationwide and in Europe after Alonso’s departure.
