Lyon relegated to Ligue 2

The giants of the French League Olympique Lyon have been relegated to Ligue 2 (Second Division) due to financial problems.

The decrease was confirmed by the French League Soccer Government Body (LFP) in an official statement (through Get French Football News).

The decision to relegate Lyon was decided after a meeting with the National Management Control Directorate (DNCG).

DNCG is the organization responsible for monitoring and supervising the accounts of the football clubs of the Professional Association in France.

Lyon received a provisional decrease during the last meeting with the French football financial body on the basis that if their financial situation did not improve, they would be relegated to the second French level.

Eagle Football Group, the owner consortium of Lyon, has taken multiple financial levers to try to convince DNCG that the financial situation had improved drastically, including the sale of John’s textor’s participation in Crystal Palace and Lyon’s women’s team. However, this has not satisfied the necessary requirements.

This development occurred despite the owner of Lyon, textor, sounds positive about the potential result after the meeting.

He revealed to the press that the financial situation of the Rhône club had improved and that he was happy with the meeting.

In statements to the press, Textor said: “You can see the contributions of our shareholders, we have invested a new capital, not only for the DNCG, but also for our UEFA license process.

“Not to mention the good news of the sale of Crystal Palace. Our liquidity situation has improved considerably.”

Lyon will now have to play football at the second level next season.
