Coventry City beat Nottingham Forest to end their wait for EPL victory

Coventry City ended a 25-year wait for a Premier League win on Saturday after securing a dramatic 1-0 victory away to Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.

The victory marked Coventry’s first Premier League triumph since April 2001, when they defeated Bradford City 2-1 before being relegated from the top flight at the end of that season.

Newly promoted Sky Blues had endured a difficult start to their return to the Premier League, losing their first four games without scoring and sitting bottom of the table before traveling to Nottingham.

However, Frank Lampard’s side produced a disciplined performance which frustrated Forest and they eventually found the breakthrough in the second half.

Jay Dasilva scored the decisive goal after goalkeeper Carl Rushworth launched a long ball forward. Dasilva kept his composure to finish calmly and give Coventry their first goal and points of the league season.

Forest pushed hard for an equalizer as the match entered its closing stages, but Coventry’s defense held firm.

VAR denies Forest’s late equaliser

Nottingham Forest looked to have saved a point when Igor Jesus found the net late in the game.

The celebrations were short-lived, however, as the goal was disallowed following a VAR review for a foul on Coventry defender Caleb Yirenkyi.

The decision preserved Coventry’s narrow lead and added to Forest’s frustration after the hosts had created opportunities to get back into the contest.

Bobby Thomas also made a crucial pass on the goal line after Morgan Gibbs-White lifted the ball over Rushworth as Forest continued their search for an equaliser.

Rushworth was another key figure for Coventry, producing important saves during Forest’s late pressure to ensure Lampard’s side held on for a historic victory.

The result provides a big boost to Coventry after a difficult opening to life in the Premier League and gives them their first points of the season ahead of the international break.

For Forest, the defeat was their second of the league, leaving them with one win from their opening five games.
