Liberia’s anti-graft drive must be fair.

By Stephen G. Fellajuah

Suspended Acting Chairman of the Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA), Mr. Abdullah Kamara, has officially responded to his suspension, which hinged on a General Auditing Commission (GAC) report linking him to alleged procurement irregularities, calling for an impartial and prompt investigation free from political interference.

In a statement issued July 1, 2025, Kamara welcomed President Joseph Boakai’s decision to initiate a transparent probe into the matter, stressing that he has “absolutely nothing to hide.” He asserted that the controversial contract cited by the GAC, awarded to Tamma Corporation, was approved in 2023, prior to his appointment as Acting Chairman.

Tamma Corporation is a company Kamara founded during his time as a private businessman.

“I did not award any contract to myself or my company during my tenure,” Kamara said, emphasizing that the decisions in question were made before his leadership at the LTA began.

The GAC report accused the previous LTA board of bypassing the Public Procurement and Concessions Commission (PPCC) procedures in awarding the contract to Tamma Corporation. Mr. Kamara maintained that his role was unrelated to that process and expressed his full willingness to cooperate with investigative bodies.

“I reaffirm my willingness to fully cooperate with the LACC, the Ministry of Justice, or any competent legal authority in pursuit of the truth,” he said, adding that Liberia needs public officials who are accountable and institutions that function without fear or favor.

He praised President Boakai’s commitment to accountability and reiterated his respect for the rule of law. The suspended LTA boss also urged that the investigation be conducted fairly, without bias, and in accordance with the presumption of innocence.

“This moment is a test of our national commitment to fairness, justice, and institutional accountability,” Kamara stated, affirming that his conscience is clear and that his service has always been guided by integrity.
