Nelfund to launch work work for student loan recipients in 2026

In an effort to improve the results of their student loan programs and facilitate the transition of graduates into the workforce, Nigeria education loan funds (Nelfund) have launched plans to introduce the centralized work portal in 2026.

This initiative, aimed at connecting student loan beneficiaries with job opportunities both in Nigeria and abroad, was announced during the involvement of the media in Abuja to mark the first warning of student loan schemes.

Speaking at the event, Nelfund Director Akintunde Sawyerr, explained that although the agency did not guarantee work, the job portal would function as a strategic platform to support the prospects of beneficiary careers.

“We not only provide loans and leave their own students. This work portal is the way we support their journey to economic stability,” said Sawyerr.

According to him, the portal will consolidate a list of jobs from the public and private sectors, as well as international organizations that want to employ skilled Nigerian graduates.

Sawyerr also clarified that student loan payments will only begin as soon as the beneficiaries have completed the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and get a profitable job.

“If you don’t have a job, you don’t pay. And when you finally get a job, your payment starts to be fresh,” he said.

He further explained the payment mechanism, noting that once the beneficiaries were employed, 10 percent of their monthly income would be automatically deducted by the employer and sent to the Nelfund, after verification through a list of employment.
