A contingent of 60 athletes has abandoned Nigeria to Annaba, Algeria, to compete in the inaugural edition of the African School Sports Championship, which will take place from July 26 to August 5, 2025 in the Nation of North Africa.
The athletes will represent Nigeria in 10 sports, which includes: athletics (12 athletes), swimming (8), football (18), taekwondo (4), beach canoe (4), bádminton (3), 3 × 3 basketball (3), beach volleyball (2), cycling (2) and table tennis (2).
General Director of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Excmo. Bukola Olopade described the event as a milestone on the base trip of Nigeria.
“This championship means a lot to us because it is about planting seeds. These athletes are ambassadors of our future. We are deliberate in the creation of roads from the classroom to the global stage.”
Before the game, the team camped at the Moshers Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, where they underwent training.
The Games, organized by the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA), are aimed at instilling Olympic values in African youth and providing a structured platform for the identification, integration and development of talent at the base level.
In line with guidelines, all participating athletes presented valid school certificates. The NSC, in collaboration with the Olympic Committee of Nigeria (NOC), also obtained paternal authorizations for all minor athletes in coordination with their families.
Nigeria’s participation reflects the broader commitment of the federal government with the basic development, aligned with the vision of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to build a robust and sustainable sports ecosystem that fosters talent from an early age and guarantees a transition without problems to the performance of the elite.
