The African Democratic Congress (ADC) is facing a new internal turbulence such as Nafi’u Bala, a former candidate for the party governor in the State of Gombe and former national vice president, has declared himself unilaterally national president to interim.

During a press conference held at the end of Wednesday in Abuja, Bala strongly criticized the party’s faction led by the former president of the Senate David Mark, accusing him of having violated the Constitution of the ADC and seizure control with illegitimate means.

“We wish to attract the attention of all the members of our large party and the Nigerians in general, to the acts in the course of political hooliganism perpetrated by some individuals who had so far been entrusted with the leadership of the party”, a Vanguard relationship said Bala for declaring Bala.

He said that the party’s internal framework had been delivered to figures without real links with the ADC, a move he said represented a threat to internal democracy and the ideological integrity of the party.

Bala’s declaration was a direct refutation for the renovation announced on July 2 by Ralph Nwosu, the founder of the ADC and former national president, who had dissolved the National Working Committee (NWC) and supported a provisional leadership under David Mark.

This reorganization is part of a wider political coalition that includes remarkable opposition characters such as Atiku Abubakar, Uche Secondus, Aminu Tambuwal, Peter Obi and Nasir El-Romai, positioning the ADC as a joint platform for the 2027 elections.

Bala denounced the move as “a shameful political acquisition orchestrated by strangers” and described it as “political melodrama”, calling it a betrayal of the party values.

“In the history of democracy all over the world, no leader of the party or group of leaders has the power to arbitrarily transfer the elected mandates or the political authority to non -members,” he said, claiming that the legitimate leadership of the party must derive from the two electoral processes.

Considering constitutional support for its new position, Bala said that his assumption of the provisional presidency aligns with the internal rules of the ADC.
“I ask the independent national electoral commission (INC) to recognize me urgently as the legitimate president of the African democratic congress,” he appealed.

He also issued a warning for the group led by Mark, stating that if they do not reverse and respect the fundamental statutes of the party, he would have started a legal procedure to restore what he called “legitimate leadership, transparent and guided by people”.

The latter clash of leadership is added to the uncertainty that surrounds the ADC at a time when it aims to position itself as a credible alternative to the All Progressive Congress sentence (APC) in view of the general elections of 2027.
