The Ogun State Government has intensified the cleanup of lead contaminated areas in Ogijo, Sagamu Local Government Area, with the evacuation of illegally dumped industrial waste from the affected communities.
The ongoing cleanup, coordinated by the Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA), is aimed at removing suspected sources of lead contamination and other hazardous materials that could pose environmental and public health risks to residents, workers and other stakeholders.
The clean-up operation, which began earlier in the week, is part of the state government’s efforts to address the environmental impact of industrial activities in Ogijo and return the affected communities to safer and healthier conditions.
OGEPA officials evacuated the illegally dumped waste as part of measures to prevent further exposure to potentially contaminated materials and reduce the risk of continued pollution of the surrounding environment.
PLATFORM TIMES had previously reported the impact of lead contamination in Ogijo following the discovery of the hazardous element in the area, raising concerns over potential risks to residents and the environment.
The state government’s latest intervention therefore represents a continuation of efforts to address environmental concerns associated with contamination by lead and other hazardous materials in the industrial city.
The agency said waste removal remains a critical component of the broader cleanup program designed to restore Ogijo’s environmental integrity.
OGEPA Director General, Kehinde Bello, assured residents that the state government is determined to carry out a comprehensive clean-up of the affected areas.
Bello said the agency will continue to implement appropriate environmental management measures to identify and address sources of contamination in Ogijo.
He described the evacuation of illegally dumped waste as an important step towards containing the environmental threat and restoring the affected places.
The OGEPA boss urged residents, industrial operators and other stakeholders to cooperate with officials carrying out the clean-up exercise.
It also warned against practices that could worsen environmental contamination, particularly the indiscriminate dumping of industrial waste and waste.
Bello said the government will support the cleanup operation until the affected areas are adequately cleared.
He added that the ultimate goal is to restore Ogijo to a safe, healthy and environmentally sustainable industrial community.
