The Lagos government urges trade unions to end unlimited strikes

The Lagos state government has appealed to the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of all staff at the Lagos State University (Lasu) to cancel the ongoing unlimited strike.

The government convinces stakeholders that the welfare of staff and students remains a top priority.

This appeal came as an academic and administrative activity at the institution that remained paralyzed after the start of industrial action last Friday.

This strike was declared by JAC, an umbrella body consisting of university academic staff (Asuu-Lasu), Nigeria University Senior Staff Association (Ssanu-Lasu), Non-Akademic Staff Union (Nasu-Lasu), and National Academic Technology Association (Naat-Lasu), more than excess revies.

In a statement issued on Monday by the Director of Public Affairs at the Tertiary Ministry of Education, Bpk. Mamud Hassan, the state government, acknowledged the acceptance of various formal correspondences from striking unions and noted that high levels of involvement had taken place to overcome their concerns.

According to Hassan, the meeting had been held involving senior government officials, including the Head of Service, Bode Agoro, to discuss the demands filed by the trade union.

He added that the two previous parties had achieved an understanding to suspend actions to interfere with anything for the sake of sustainable dialogue, an agreement that has now been running by trade unions.

“The suspension of academic and administrative activities not only disrupts the academic calendar but also has a negative impact on the future of our students, which remains the heart of the university’s mission,” the statement said.

Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Bpk. Tolani Sule, also called for calm and cooperation, urged union leaders to recognize sustainable efforts from the state government to fund universities amid competing fiscal demands.

“The door remains open to a constructive dialogue,” said Sule. “The government is committed to restoring industrial harmony in Lasu, and we believe that lasting resolution can only be achieved through meaningful involvement, not a prolonged disorder.”

Repeating the position of the country, Sule stressed that administration remains focused on improving tertiary education and requesting “understanding and trust” among all parties.

“We ask for peace and cooperation. With strong collaboration and joint commitment, we can arrive at a sustainable solution that serves the best interests of all stakeholders, especially students.”
