Pope Leo will sing Benedetto Carlo Acutis on Sunday 7 September, the first ceremony of his mandate and the first Catholic saint of the millennial generation, raising him to the same level as Mother Teresa and Francis of Assisi.
Carlo, an Italian of British origin who died of leukemia in 2006 at the age of 15, had been canonized on April 27 during the teenage jubilee. The ceremony was postponed after the death of Pope Francis on April 21st.
Carlo, sometimes indicated as “influencers of God”, has learned several computer coding languages before his death and has built websites to spread his faith.
■ What are the passages for the canonization of a saint?
Holiness indicates that the Church believes that the person is in paradise with God.
The causes of holiness are examined by a Vatican department who must confirm that the person has lived a holy life. Usually it also involves the verification of two miracles attributed to the intercession of the future saint with God in heaven.
■ What were the miracles attributed to Benedetto Carlo Acutis?
In 2020, the church recognized its first miracle, involving a 4 -year -old Brazilian boy who was determined to be healed by a serious pancreatic birth defect. After the boy’s mother prayed Carlo in 2013, his son experienced a sudden and complete recovery.
In May 2024 a second miracle was announced, this time she involved a woman from Costa Rica. In 2022, she prayed to Carlo’s tomb in Assisi, in Italy, after her daughter suffered a serious head injury for a bicycle accident. The doctors had informed the mother who was unlikely that her daughter survives.
In his pilgrimage to Carlo’s tomb, the mother left a note. On the same day, his daughter started breathing spontaneously. The next day, he began to move and regained part of his speech. Ten days later, a cat scan showed that his cerebral bleeding had disappeared.
■ Who was Blessed Carlo Acutis?
Born in 1991, Carlo used his technological skills to evangelize and distinguished himself for his joyful faith and compassion for others. He developed websites for his parish and the largest Catholic Church.
Carlo’s beatification took place in October 2020, when Pope Francis declared that the teenager had reached the bliss of the sky, and was given the title of “Benedetto”.
His mother, Antonia Salzano, told Reuters in April that the heart of her son’s appeal was that the same life as the other teenagers lived in the 2000s.
“Carlo was a normal child like (others),” he said. “He played, to get friends and go to school. But his extraordinary quality was the fact that he opened the door of his heart to Jesus and put Jesus first in his life.”
■ How many canonization have been declared in recent years?
Pope Leo XIV will preside over his first canonization on September 7, declaring the holiness of two young Italians.
Seven other Benedetti will be remedied on October 19th for the world mission on Sunday, according to the Vatican News.
■ When is the canonization ceremony?
The canonization of Carlo is set for September 7 at 10:00 local time in the square of San Pietro in Rome. Access to St. Peter’s Square opens at 8 in the morning and tickets or reservations are not required for the public in general, according to the Vatican.
