Millions of Nigerians watched the rare Eclipse ‘Blood Moon’

Millions of Nigerians looked at the sky on Sunday night, September 7, 2025, as a rare total lunar eclipse that was highly anticipated by the sky in a dramatic red light for more than an hour.

Heavenly spectacle, which lasted about 82 minutes, began shortly after 8 pm and seen throughout Africa, Asia and Europe. During the eclipse, the shadow of the earth really covered the moon, leaving it with a reddish color that impressed many observers.

Astronomers explain that the appearance like blood is caused by sunlight that filters through the earth’s atmosphere, scatters shorter wavelengths and only allows red lights to reach the surface of the moon. Unlike a solar eclipse, experts emphasize that the program is safe to watch with the naked eye.

Throughout Nigeria, residents in cities including Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt gathered on the roof, balcony, and open space to witness the phenomenon. Social media platforms lights up with photos and videos as hashtags such as #bloodmoon and #Eclipse2025 trends in Tiktok and Instagram.

The National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) had previously warned the public about the incident, urged the Nigerians to take the opportunity to observe one of the rarest natural wonders.

This marks the total first lunar eclipse seen in Nigeria since 2022. Scientists note that while partial eclipses are more common, an event with this duration may not occur again for several years.

For many Nigerians, the moment is more than just a scientific appearance – it is a rare night of the miracle, reflection, and mutual connection under the same sky.
