Anthropic to pay a settlement of $ 1.5 billion for the use of pirated books in AI

Anthropic intelligence startups have agreed to pay a shocking $ 1.5 billion completion after being accused of using pirated books to train large language models, marking one of the most consequence copyright disputes in the fast growing AI industry.

This settlement follows the legal battle for months brought by large publishers, who accuse that anthropic downloads and digesting thousands of books protected by copyright – without authorization or compensation – to improve the performance of the generative AI system. The titles are reported to be included as contemporary best -selling books and classic works that are still under copyright protection.

According to a court submission, the publisher believes that anthropic acts are “theft of systematic intellectual property,” damaging the author’s economic rights while giving an unfair profit company in the competitive AI market. The $ 1.5 billion is one of the largest copyright related to US history.

In a statement, Anthropic said the agreement allowed him to “move forward responsibly” while reaffirming his commitment to build partnerships with rights holders. The company does not recognize responsibilities but confirms that it will work to build a license framework with publishers for future training.

Industrial Analyst said this case established the main precedent. This settlement can accelerate pressure on other AI companies, including OpenAI, Meta, and Google, which also faces lawsuits for alleged misuse of content protected by copyright in training data. “This indicates a turning point,” said an analyst. “AI companies can no longer ignore copyright law and hope innovation will protect them.”
