A number of Sokoto residents escaped from the Lakurawa terrorist who sank when the boat overturned

A number of residents of the Sabon Birni Regional Government who were not determined were reported to have lost their lives after a ship accident when they fled from the safety of the new waves of the Lakurawa terrorist attack.

The Sokoto State Police Command that confirmed the incident in a statement on Saturday said the ship was overloaded when the villagers tried to escape from the terrorists.

The police statement revealed the incident that occurred in the early morning threw the community to mourn when the search and rescue operation was ongoing to recover the bodies of victims who were still missing.

The statement noted that although the number of passengers who were right on the boat that had a bad fate was not confirmed, local witnesses confirmed that they were far above 30 on the ship.

According to an eyewitness account, the victims were desperate villagers who had been brought to the waters in an panic effort to escape from the bandits of robbers, but their boats were overloaded upside down in the middle of the road, plunged them into the river.

A resident who spoke with a journalist on anonymous condition said that the latest accident marked the fourth fatal ship accident in less than two months, increasing concerns about increasing humanitarian victims from insecurity and unsafe water transportation in the state.

“Sabon Birni residents and neighboring communities continue to live under the siege, with criminal gangs and Lakurawa rebels released endless attacks, killing, kidnapping, and displacing a number of villagers,” said the resident.

“Despite the repetitive guarantees of the government, the bandits are still rooted in many parts of the state, peaking the inspection post, agricultural land that burns, and forces rural residents into the mass exodus.

“For now, the families of the victims of Sabon Birni are waiting in sadness on the riverbank when the team of divers and savior looking for those they love a lot of them may never return to life,” he said.

He added that the situation underlines the depth of insecurity that does not have a community, regardless of political excellence, especially because the council is the city of origin of the Deputy Governor of the State, Idris Muhammad Gobir.
