When the UN Security Council prepares a critical emergency session about the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, Israel has announced that it will not be present – making the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah, as a reason for its absence.
This step was carried out in the middle of a military campaign that intensified in Gaza and increased international supervision of Israeli actions.
Israel, who was invited to participate in high -risk meetings scheduled on Tuesday, will make his seats empty, triggering questions about their willingness to be involved in a global dialogue over the increase in conflict.
“I want to tell you that the Israeli delegation will not participate in this meeting, because it coincides with Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year,” Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, wrote in a letter to the President of the Security Council.
“Apart from Israel’s request to the president and members of the council to reschedule, the meeting remains set for that date – one of the most significant in the Jewish calendar, marks the start of high holy days,” Danon added.
The decision to be present comes at a very important time. Israeli troops continued their land attacks in Gaza, with the latest reports and AFP recordings showing solid smoke rising from the city of Gaza and the flow of Palestinians fled south. The numbers of victims remain terrible, with humanitarian organizations urged international actions to prevent further civil suffering.

“It is unfortunate that the Security Council will meet without Israel,” Danon said in a video statement on Monday, underlining what Israel claimed was the choice of scheduling that did not care about the council.
The security council meeting was ongoing during the UN high week, when global leaders gathered in New York to discuss major international issues. The absence of Israel – whose military campaign is at the center of the meeting – can leave a critical gap in the discussion.
Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to handle the UN General Assembly on Friday. His speech will follow the wave of formal recognition of Palestinian state state by several western countries – huts that have attracted sharp criticism from Israel.
When international pressure increases and diplomatic channels grow tense, Israel’s decision to miss the UN Security Council meeting is likely to increase fuel to the ongoing debate about handling both diplomacy and military action in Gaza.
