The leadership of the opposition coalition has directed its members to resign from their current political parties and fully in harmony with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), although there is no time deadline for transition.
The Secretary of the ADC National Publicity, Bolaji Abdullahi, announced a decision in Abuja on Thursday after the caucus meeting which was attended by senior party leaders and leading political figures.
Since the adoption on July 2 as a coalition platform to challenge the President of the Tinubu Bola in the 2027 General Election, ADC has attracted some of the defeats from opposition leaders. However, many of the high profile allies have not officially left their party.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, for example, has left the Democratic Party (PDP) but has not officially joined the ADC. The 2023 Labor Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, also remained in his party despite associating with a coalition.
Abdullahi revealed that the coalition has now left all efforts related to the proposed African Democratic Association (ADA), noting that all presidential candidates in the block have agreed to support anyone who appears as a carrier of the party flag after the preliminary election. He further confirmed that the National Work Committee would soon release a schedule for the Governor’s preliminary selection at Osun and Ekiti ahead of the next year’s cycle election.
The Thursday Caucus meeting was chaired by the National Chairperson of ADC and former Senate President David Mark. Participants including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, National Secretary Rauf Aregbesola, former Governor of Kaduna Nasir El-Rufai State, former Governor of the State Sokoto Aminu Tambuwal, and former Governor of Rotimi Amaechi’s rotation state.
