Nigerian basketball battles of 18 years, dreams of reaching the top

On the cracked courts of Surulere, Ebuka Okere, a 18 -year -old basketball player, continues to chase her dream of making it great despite years of setbacks and struggles.

Known in his community for his passion and determination, Okere stands out as one of the few who have refused to leave the game, even when many of his classmates abandoned due to financial and personal challenges.

His trip has been far from being soft. From recurring lesions to the lack of adequate facilities and limited opportunities, or has had to fight for each opportunity to play.

“Sometimes I can’t even afford good shoes or transportation to training, but I still find my way to the court,” Okere told this journalist.

Currently, it competes in small community tournaments and collection games in Surulere and Yaba. But his eyes are put in larger stages: one day he puts the colors of the Nigerian basketball giants Rivers HOOPERS o Lagos islanders.

Okere draws his passion back to high school, when he collected basketball for the first time.

“The first time I held the ball, I felt something special. It was then that I knew this was what I wanted to do,” he recalled.

Despite frustrations, his motivation remains strong, fed by the desire to inspire.

“I want to inspire children in my area that they feel they can’t do it. If I succeed, it won’t be just for me, it will also be for them,” he explained.

For now, its name has not yet resonated on the national stage, but its resistance embodies the spirit of many young Nigerian athletes, fingers that fight against probabilities. With proper support, Okere believes that he can overcome his setbacks and one day represent Lagos and Nigeria at the highest basketball levels.
