The United States government has issued a security alert to its citizens in Nigeria, warning them to remain vigilant amid escalating hostilities between America and Iran.
In a statement released on Monday, US authorities advised Americans abroad to follow guidance from embassies and consulates: “Following the launch of US combat operations in Iran, Americans around the world and particularly in the Middle East should follow the guidance in the latest security alert issued by the nearest US embassy or consulate.”
The alert warns that travel disruption may occur due to periodic airspace closures related to this crisis. Citizens are urged to exercise caution, sign up for the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, and subscribe to the Department of State’s WhatsApp security update channel for timely information.
This warning came after Iranian and local media confirmed the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in an airstrike reportedly carried out by the US and Israel. Several senior Iranian officials were also killed.
In retaliation, Iran launched several missile attacks on US bases in the Gulf countries, including Saudi Arabia, and vowed to avenge the deaths of its leaders.
US President Donald Trump, speaking in a live broadcast on Saturday, said he was determined to eliminate members of the Iranian regime and urged Iranians to take control of their government once the military operation is complete.
