US issues security alert over potential threat to American sites, schools in Nigeria

The United States Department of State has issued a security alert regarding possible threats targeting American facilities and American-linked schools in Nigeria, and advised citizens to remain vigilant and take precautions.

The warning was announced on Monday in a notice circulated by the US diplomatic mission in Abuja.

According to the alert, “The US Embassy in Abuja is notifying US citizens of possible terrorist threats against US facilities and US-affiliated schools in Nigeria,” the notice said.

American citizens living in or visiting the country are urged to be vigilant and take steps to increase their personal safety in light of the potential risks.

The embassy further advised US citizens to review their daily routines and remain cautious in public spaces.

“Increasing awareness of your surroundings, avoiding predictable routines, and reviewing general safety precautions with your family can help reduce your risk,” he says.

But authorities did not provide specific details about the origin of the threat or the individuals or groups that may have been involved.

This security alert was issued amidst increasing geopolitical tensions involving the United States and several global actors. On Christmas Day, US President Donald Trump ordered a military strike in Nigeria, saying the operation targeted jihadist elements operating in the country.

The bombing followed Trump’s previous statement claiming that Christians were being persecuted in Africa’s most populous country. However, this statement is still disputed by analysts and observers, who note that violence in Nigeria has impacted both Christian and Muslim communities.

This latest warning also coincides with a broader global security alert issued by the United States after Washington and Israel carried out military strikes against Iran.

Iran then retaliated with missile and drone attacks targeting neighboring countries aligned with the United States, further escalating regional tensions and sparking increased security concerns around the world.
