The Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Dr. Peter Akpe, has warned Nigeria’s political class against overly ambitious and unnecessary competition in the pursuit of leadership positions.
Dr Akpe gave the advice during a special thanksgiving service held in his honor to mark his 55th birthday at the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) Province 1 headquarters, Higher Ground Parish, Yenagoa.
Accompanied by his wife, Dr. Favor Akpe, and other family members, Dr. Akpe attributed his elevation to the position of deputy governor to the effect of God’s mercy and grace on his life.
He noted that while ambition is natural, excessive ambition often leads people to actions contrary to God’s plans. He then called on rulers, church leaders and families to trust in the Almighty who sees and knows all.
“To all of us, I just want to encourage those in government, church leadership and families to hold on to God. He will direct your path. Let us not be too ambitious or engage in unnecessary competitiveness. If we live our lives this way, even if you get that thing, God may leave you alone to achieve it,” he said.
In a sermon titled “The Weapon of Gratitude”, Pastor Emmanuel Okolo of RCCG Youth Province 10, Port Harcourt, preached from Luke 17:11-19, describing gratitude as one of the greatest weapons available to the children of God.
He emphasized that thanksgiving makes healing, liberation and breakthroughs permanent.
Special prayers were offered for Dr Akpe and his family by the Senior Pastor in Charge of RCCG Region 27, Pastor Simon Folasayo.
Messages of goodwill were delivered on behalf of the Akpe family by Dr Anthony Akpe, the Church by Pastor Leonard Ejiegbu, the Ebedebiri community by Professor ThankGod Apere and the Bayelsa State Government by Dr Jones Ebieri.
Last Tuesday, friends of the Deputy Governor organized a new football match between the Comrades Family and the Disciples of Akpe at the Samson Siasia Sports Complex in Ovom, Yenagoa to mark the occasion.
