[Press Statement] The Rivers State Governor, His Excellency Sir Siminalayi Fubara (KSC), has charged all citizens and residents of the State to prioritize eye health and undergo glaucoma screening to prevent avoidable vision loss.

The Governor issued the directive on Thursday, March 12, 2026, at Government House, Port Harcourt.

In a goodwill message to mark World Glaucoma Day, Governor Fubara described glaucoma as a leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide, stressing that early diagnosis is key to preventing vision loss.

“I encourage everyone, especially those over the age of 40 or with a family history of vision problems, to visit one of our many healthcare facilities and get their vision checked.

“My administration is committed to improving healthcare in Rivers State. We will continue to support initiatives that promote eye health and reduce preventable blindness.

“Let us unite for a glaucoma-free Rivers State. Protect your eyesight, it is priceless.”
Happy World Glaucoma Day,” he said.

World Glaucoma Day which is celebrated every year on March 12 is dedicated to raising awareness of glaucoma, one of the main causes of irreversible blindness worldwide. Glaucoma is often called the “silent thief of sight” because it can progress without noticeable symptoms until significant vision loss occurs. It affects over 75 million people worldwide, of which almost 50% do not know they have it.
