Claiming: The All Progressives Congress has registered 12 million members while the African Democratic Congress has only 1 million members.
Indictment: Claims cannot be independently verified.
Full Text:
A claim posted on the “Tinubu Media Team” Facebook page claiming that APC has a member strength of 12 million compared to ADC which has 1 million members.
The post is a thinly veiled analysis of the upcoming election, considering political parties’ chances.
Based on statistics, the post concluded that other political parties have no chance against incumbent President Bola Tinubu of the APC in the 2027 national elections.
Recall that alliances have been formed ahead of the 2027 elections, with top political figures leaving one party for another. Notably, Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, former members of the People’s Democratic Party and Labor Party, have allied and joined the ADC.
With many other politicians joining the ADC, the party is positioned to become a major opposition in the run-up to the elections.
This post received fewer than 50 interactions in the last 24 hours, but may attract more attention as political discourse becomes mainstream in the coming days.
Verification:
Ripples Nigeria reports that the All Progressives Congress recently launched an e-registration platform for its members in 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
After the initial registration deadline passed, the party said more than 7 million people had registered on the digital membership platform.
The deadline was extended, and the party aims to have 12.5 million registered members by the end of the process. However, no independent source has been able to verify whether the party is meeting these targets.
The party’s electronic registration follows the New Election Law 2026 which introduced mandatory electronic membership registration for all political parties. Many parties have also launched their membership e-registration platforms.
Votes are due in 2023
It is important to note that Tinubu secured a total of 8,794,726 votes in the 2023 elections, although the political landscape has changed since then.
On the other hand, the presidential candidate from ADC received a total of 81,919 votes to occupy fifth place in the fiercely contested election. More and more politicians and their followers have defected to the party in recent times.
In the last presidential election, Atiku (PDP) polled 6,984,520 votes to finish second, while Obi (LP) polled 6,101,533 votes to finish third.
However, often when politicians defect, not all members follow them to the new party.
Further checks revealed that the Independent National Electoral Commission did not include membership strength in its profile political parties published on its website.
Only the party logo, name of the main leader, secretariat address and telephone number are published.
Conclusion:
There is no credible database on the membership strength of all political parties in Nigeria, including APC and ADC. Therefore, these claims cannot be independently verified.
