The Presidency explained the agreement with the UK on the deportation of Nigerians

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Temitope Ajayi explains more about the agreement reached with the UK to deport certain groups of people to Nigeria.

Presidential aides said in a statement on Friday that the country would not accept foreigners deported under a new migration agreement with Britain.

According to him, the agreement is only for Nigerians living in the UK without official permission, and not for citizens of other countries.

He explained that the agreement signed during President Bola Tinubu’s visit to the UK was solely related to the repatriation of Nigerian citizens who do not have the right to reside in the UK.

Ajayi rejected claims that Nigeria would be forced to accept non-citizens, describing the reports as false.

He said, “Nigeria is not taking back non-Nigerians, and the UK is not forcing us to take in people who are not our citizens.”

According to him, the agreement also ensures that Nigerians returning home will be treated fairly and with respect in accordance with the law.

He added that those affected could still travel back to the UK in the future if they meet immigration requirements.

The Ministry of Home Affairs also stated that the agreement sets out a clear process for repatriating Nigerians in a safe and organized manner.

It said the plan includes proper travel documents, careful identity checks and protection for vulnerable people, such as victims of human trafficking.

The ministry added that the two countries will collaborate on information exchange, training and improving border and migration systems.
