The ADC questioned APC’s confidence heading into 2027, despite its strong political control

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has voiced concern over what it describes as the ruling All Progressives Congress’ (APC) unease ahead of the 2027 general elections, despite the party dominating Nigeria’s political landscape.

The opposition party noted that the APC currently controls 31 states and controls about 90 percent of the members of the National Assembly, but still appears uncertain about its electoral future.

Speaking in a television interview, ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, questioned what he described as the ruling party’s “growing anxiety” ahead of the next election cycle.

He said that the extensive control that the APC has over political structures would normally inspire confidence, but he argued that recent developments suggest otherwise.

“Why is a party with 31 governors and around 90 percent of national assembly members still panicking? Why are they still trying to destabilize other opposition parties?” he asked.

Abdullahi believes the party’s posture reflects doubts about its chances in a credible electoral process.

“In any free and fair election in Nigeria today, there is no way the APC will win. They have to prepare themselves for Tinubu’s victory given their extraordinary governance. But they are anxious because they know in a free and fair election, there is no way they can win. Nigerians are tired of them”, he said.

He further claimed that the cohesion of the APC was largely linked to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and warned that the party might struggle to maintain unity after his tenure.

“If APC takes power, APC is actually nothing. I know the party very well. After Tinubu, it quickly unraveled, even shocked. He was the glue that held the party together,” he said.

Abdullahi also described the ruling party as a “special purpose vehicle,” created primarily to guarantee presidential victory for former President Muhammadu Buhari and President Tinubu, and stated that the party has largely fulfilled that role.

Regarding his party’s preparations, he revealed that the ADC is exploring a consensus-based method of selecting presidential candidates for the 2027 elections, and described it as a cost-effective and unifying method.

“We try as much as possible to adopt a consensus approach because it is the cheapest approach for us,” he said.

He added that “For us, the best scenario is being able to create consensus and that’s what we’re working on.”

Although direct primaries remain an option, Abdullahi clarified that his party is no longer considering indirect primaries, in line with the provisions of the amended Election Law.
