Defense Headquarters confirmed the loss of soldiers in the Borno terror attack

The Defense Headquarters on Thursday confirmed an attack carried out by suspected Boko Haram terrorists on a military formation in Benisheikh, Borno State.

Reports emerged that at least 18 military personnel, including a brigadier general, were killed in the attack that took place in the early hours of Thursday.

Director of Defense Media Operations Maj. Gen. Michael Onoja, disclosed this in a statement in Abuja.

However, he said Operation Hadin Kai troops succeeded in repelling the attack that targeted the 29th Task Force Brigade Headquarters at 12.30 WIB.

Onoja said the rebels attempted to break through the formation’s defense perimeter but were met with “extraordinary courage, professionalism and firepower” by the troops.

He added that the soldiers under the leadership of Brigade Commander Brigadier General. Oseni Braimah, quickly launched a coordinated counterattack that forced the attackers to retreat in disarray.

“In a well-coordinated counteraction, the rebels were decisively engaged and forced to abandon their mission, leaving behind traces of their failed attack,” he said.

A defense spokesperson described the attack as a sign of desperation by terrorist elements following continued military pressure and heavy losses recorded in recent operations.

“This attack clearly reflects the desperation of terrorists who continue to carry out futile attacks on well-defended military positions,” the spokesman said.

He added that the troops’ rapid response underscored the high level of combat readiness, resilience and operational effectiveness of Operation Hadin Kai.

However, Onoja revealed that some soldiers paid the highest price in the line of duty.

“Their bravery will forever be a source of pride and inspiration to the Nigerian Armed Forces and the entire nation,” he concluded.
