A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) backed by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has taken over the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja.
This follows the reopening of the party secretariat by the police.
The PDP has been embroiled in a leadership crisis since last year with Wike’s group and another faction led by former Minister of Special Duties, Taminu Turaki, fighting for control of the party.
Wike’s faction held its national convention on March 31 and elected Abdulrahaman Mohammed as national chairman.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has given recognition to the new National Working Committee (NWC) produced at the convention.

The group’s National Publicity Secretary, Junudo Mohammed, confirmed the takeover of the PDP national secretariat in a statement on Saturday in Abuja.
He warned that the group would not tolerate any actions that could create obstacles, disturbances or breaches of peace at the secretariat in the future.
The statement read: “The National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party hereby informs all members and the general public that the National Secretariat of the Party, Wadata Plaza, as well as The Legacy House, Maitama, have been unsealed by the Nigerian Police and handed over to the National Chairman, His Excellency Abdulrahman Mohammed Takushara, and Senator Samuel Anyawu, National Secretary, in full compliance with the court order issued.
“The party commends the Nigerian Police for its professionalism and adherence to the rule of law. This action is a clear demonstration of respect for constitutional order and due process.
“The party firmly warns that it will not condone any action that may cause obstruction, disturbance or breach of peace in the secretariat again. All individuals and groups are advised to behave within the limits of the law, as security agencies have been warned to take necessary action against violators.”
