According to Oliseh, the country’s football identity must be based on speed, technical ability and aggressiveness, qualities that he believes define Nigerian players.

“That should be our identity,” he said.

The former midfielder highlighted that this philosophy should not be limited to the senior team, but rather should be implemented from the base, starting with the under-15 teams and reaching the Super Eagles.

“It has to be from the base,” he implied.

For Oliseh, consistency in playing style at all levels will facilitate the transition of players to the senior team, ensuring continuity and cohesion.

“It creates understanding,” he noted.

He also addressed the sensitive issue of foreign-born players, acknowledging their importance but warning against losing the team’s core identity.

“You have to preserve your soul,” he stressed.

Oliseh suggested that a significant portion of the team should be made up of players developed within Nigeria’s football system, arguing that they better understand the country’s football culture.

“It’s about balance,” he added.

His comments come at a time when Nigeria is reflecting on its football direction following recent disappointments, including failure to qualify for major tournaments.

For many, the absence of a clear identity has been a recurring problem.

Oliseh’s call highlights the need for long-term planning and structural alignment at all levels of the game.

Because in football success is not just about talent.

It’s about identity.

And as Oliseh insists, Nigeria must define its own and stay true to it.
