Leicester’s nightmare season ends in relegation from League One

Leicester City were relegated to the third tier of English football following a dramatic 2-2 draw with Hull City at the King Power Stadium on Tuesday night.

The result confirms a disappointing campaign for the 2016 Premier League champions as they drop to League One for the second time in their 142-year history. Relegation closes a bitter circle for the East Midlands side, whose fairytale title came just seven years after their last spell in the third division.

Needing a win to keep their survival hopes alive, Leicester got off to a disastrous start and gifted Hull the opening goal. Goalkeeper Asmir Begovic’s misplaced pass fell straight to Liam Millar, who calmly scored to put the visitors ahead.

The Foxes responded after the break, with Jordan James converting from the penalty spot after Lewis Koumas fouled Abdul Fatawu. Moments later, Luke Thomas fired a volley from close range to turn the game around and spark faith among the home fans.

However, Leicester’s hopes were dashed when Oli McBurnie scored to equalize for Hull, ensuring the points were shared. The hosts looked for a late goal, with Patson Daka hitting the crossbar, while Aaron Ramsey missed two late chances and Thomas saw an injury-time shot blocked by Semi Ajayi.

Hull also threatened to snatch victory, but had to settle for a draw, a result that leaves them out of the play-off places on goal difference.

For Leicester, the final whistle marked the end of a turbulent season and confirmed their drop to the third tier, a stark contrast to their all-time highs less than a decade ago.
