Midnight Siege Foiled: 24 rebels neutralized as troops repel attack on Yobe

In a show of superior tactical strength, frontline troops of Operation Hadin Kai have successfully crushed a midnight attack launched by suspected insurgents.

The meeting which took place in the early hours of Thursday resulted in the neutralization of 24 terrorists following a high intensity firefight in the Kukareta axis of Yobe State.

The attackers reportedly targeted strategic military formations, in the hope of capturing the positions under cover of darkness. However, they were faced with a wall of fire that lasted approximately three hours.

The attack began shortly after midnight, as the rebels attempted to exploit the element of surprise. According to military reports, the fighting reached its peak intensity between 00:00 and 03:00, when the Joint Task Force struggled to secure the perimeter.

Confirming the incident in a statement released on Thursday, Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force, North East Operations Hadin Kai, Lt. Col. Sani Uba, noted that the response was swift and decisive.

“Operation Hadin Kai troops under Sector 2 succeeded in repelling a terrorist attack at the Kukareta location,” said Uba.

The Lieutenant Colonel further explained that the military employed a “coordinated offensive and defensive” strategy, which ultimately broke the resolve of the attackers and forced the surviving remnants to retreat in disarray.

Although 24 militants were confirmed killed in the clashes, Nigerian troops also paid the price. Two soldiers were injured in the firefight; However, they have stabilized and are receiving medical treatment. Additionally, one armored vehicle was reported damaged during the height of the fighting.

In addition to the neutralization of personnel, the troops also succeeded in intercepting a large amount of sophisticated weaponry that the rebels had brought for the operation.

The weapons recovered included 18 AK-47 rifles, 3 multi-purpose machine guns (GPMG), 2 PKT anti-aircraft guns, 3 rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) canisters, 2 mortar canisters, 4 hand grenades, 18 AK-47 magazines and assorted ammunition.

The successful defense of the Kukareta military formation was hailed as a major blow to the rebels’ ability to coordinate large-scale attacks in the sector. Lt. Col. Uba emphasized that troops remain on high alert, maintaining momentum to ensure total security in the area.

As of Thursday afternoon, clearance operations were still underway in the general area to trace any fleeing militants who may have fled into the surrounding bushes with gunshot wounds.
