Nigeria senior national team head coach Eric Chelle explained how his team recovered from a 0-1 deficit to record a 2-1 victory over Madagascar in the opening match of the AFCON 2027 qualifiers, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.
Goals from debutants George Ilenikhena and Moses Usor helped Nigeria recover from a delay and claim their first victory ahead of Tuesday’s match against Guinea-Bissau.
Speaking at the post-match conference, Chelle admitted that his team did not play at the level required of them and also praised goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali for his save with the score at 1-1.
“We were not good enough in certain areas of the game and conceded a serious error. We also have to praise Nwabali for his save at 1-1 and then we recovered to get this victory,” he said.
He went further to explain the tactical change that worked for his team. “We realized that they parked the bus with so many players behind it, which made it difficult for us to correctly use our 4-4-2 diamond with good results.
“When we realized it, I changed to 4-3-2-1 because when a team has players at the back you can only come from the wings. That’s why I introduced Moses Simon and Moses Usor on the wings, because they can beat their markers easily.”
