Opposition parties are calling for the resignation of the CENI president and seeking electoral reforms before 2027

Opposition political parties in Nigeria have called for the resignation of Joash Ojo Amupitan, chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, along with other major reforms ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The demands were outlined in a statement issued after the national summit of opposition political parties held in Ibadan on Saturday.

According to the statement, opposition leaders accused the INEC chairman of alleged bias in favor of the ruling All Progressives Congress and insisted that he should not supervise the 2027 elections, arguing that Nigerians had lost faith in his neutrality.

The parties also urged Nigeria’s National Assembly to urgently review the Electoral Law 2026, particularly sections they believe could undermine free and credible elections.

Other key demands included the release of detained politicians accused of bailable offenses and an extension of the deadline for party primaries until the end of July 2026.

The opposition has argued that recent guidelines issued by INEC have created obstacles for political parties in preparing for elections.

Furthermore, the summit decided to present a single presidential candidate for the 2027 elections, describing the move as necessary to prevent what they called attempts to impose a one-party state.

The statement also expressed appreciation to Seyi Makinde and residents of Oyo State for hosting the summit.
