Monrovia, April 24, 2025 — Residents of the DU-Neezo Community, comprising at least ten settlements, are sounding the alarm over worsening road conditions linking Jacob Town, Nicky’s, City View, and Weins Town. They warn that these conditions are causing deaths, miscarriages, and severe hardship.
Community members report that the dilapidated road is obstructing access to healthcare, education, and essential services. According to residents, several people have died during emergencies due to delays in reaching hospitals. Pregnant women have also suffered miscarriages while being transported on motorbikes or commercial vehicles. Students struggle to commute, and persons with disabilities face significant challenges reaching the Mission of Hope for the Disabled facility.
The road’s rehabilitation project began on July 19, 2020, when former President George M. Weah broke ground and awarded a six-month contract to Solid Rock Construction Company. However, after initial pavement work, the project stalled—reportedly due to the death of the company’s head.
Sources told this paper that during the 2023 general election campaign, another company, Cement and Steel, resumed work, but construction halted again without explanation.
Despite initial optimism, residents say the situation has deteriorated, with no visible progress. Some claim that officials in the current administration promised to include the project in the national budget, but no tangible action has been taken to date.
Residents describe the situation not as development but as a prolonged delay that has left them in difficult and life-threatening conditions.
In a recent interview, resident George K. Momo said a meeting was held between affected citizens and Montserrado County District #2 Representative Sekou S. Kanneh to address the issue. The meeting, attended by a cross-section of residents, focused on finding solutions to the road crisis. During the discussion, community General Chairman Livingstone J. Gballai outlined the challenges residents face and expressed disappointment over what he described as abandonment by authorities.
According to Momo, poor road conditions continue to hamper the transportation of patients to nearby health facilities, worsening already fragile health outcomes. Persons with disabilities are particularly affected, as accessing the Mission of Hope for the Disabled remains a major challenge.
“The project promised safer travel, better business, improved healthcare access, and a better life for the people, but today we are seeing the opposite,” Momo said.
During the meeting, Representative Kanneh acknowledged the residents’ concerns and assured them he would work to address the issue. While residents remain hopeful that the lawmaker’s intervention will lead to concrete action, they remain concerned about the persistent delays in rehabilitating the road.
