Tinubu supports Hamzat as APC candidate in Lagos

President Bola Tinubu has endorsed the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, as the consensus gubernatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).for the 2027 elections in the state.

Tinubu gave this support on Wednesday after a meeting with members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) APC Lagos at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The delegation was led by GAC leader Tajudeen Olusi and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

The Special Advisor to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the development in a post on his verified X account.

He wrote: “President Tinubu officially endorsed APC Lagos consensus gubernatorial candidate, Obafemi Hamzat, at a meeting with members of the Lagos State Government Advisory Council.”

In a conversation with State House correspondents after the meeting, Sanwo-Olu described the support as a historic moment for Lagos.

He said the visit was in the context of officially handing over Hamzat to the President to obtain validation, blessing and support ahead of the political process.

“This is a very memorable day for me personally. It is a full circle moment.

“The same team experienced this about eight years ago, when we were both presented as candidates for governor and deputy governor,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu said Hamzat had the credibility, charisma and competence required to govern Lagos State.

He commended the Deputy Governor for his loyalty, dedication and commitment over the past seven years.

“He knows the space, he knows the design of the house, and he’s been part of this journey for over 20 years,” the governor added.

Hamzat, for his part, thanked the party leaders and the President for the trust reposed in him.

He said the support reflected the strong leadership structure and succession patterns in Lagos politics.

“They are our fathers, mentors and leaders, they have experience and wisdom.

“I am happy that they brought me here to meet the President who has approved and supported the GAC’s decision,” he said.
