Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, congratulated the nation’s workers as they marked International Labor Day and commended them for their “resilience, hard work and patriotism despite the challenges they face in carrying out their duties”.
Akpabio’s praise was contained in a May Day congratulatory message he personally signed.
He said: “On this auspicious occasion of Labor Day 2026, I, Senator Godswill Akpabio, President of the 10th Senate and Speaker of the National Assembly, on behalf of the National Assembly, join millions of Nigerians at home and in the diaspora to commend and congratulate the resilient, industrious and patriotic Nigerian workers, whose sweat and sacrifice continue to sustain the heartbeat of our nation.
“Today we celebrate you, the teachers who shape our future, the farmers who feed our nation, the doctors and nurses who tend our land, the artisans, traders, public servants, security personnel and private sector employees whose daily work builds Nigeria. You are the true heroes of our democracy and the engine of our economy.”
Continuing, he said: “The 10th National Assembly recognizes the challenges workers face, from the rising cost of living to workplace demands. I assure you that the Senate remains unshakable in its commitment to legislate a living wage, safer workplaces, pension reforms, and policies that expand job creation and protect the dignity of work.
“The approval of the new national minimum wage law and the implementation of welfare packages for workers testify to this commitment.”
According to him, “As we celebrate this May Day, I urge employers, both in the public and private sectors, to prioritize the well-being of workers. A motivated workforce is the foundation of productivity and national prosperity.”
He also said: “To organized labour, I commend your constructive engagement and patriotism. The Senate will continue to work with the Nigeria Labor Congress, Congress of Trade Unions and all affiliates to ensure that the voice of the Nigerian worker is heard and respected in the chambers of politics and law.
“On behalf of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I salute your courage, celebrate your contribution and promise that we will not relent until every Nigerian worker can look to the future with hope, dignity and confidence.”
